HaD Trinket Contest

This is my entry for the HackaDay trinket contest.  Basically, they’re giving away 20 trinkets randomly for plastering their logo on something – anything.  I thought about it for a while but came up blank.  Then, while traveling, I thought “why not plaster their HaD logo on every TV I could find at this hotel.”  Now, Everyone turning on the TV will be greeted by this logo and who knows, it may become a legacy there. I did a little research and found it was fairly easy to change the splash screen on LG TVs.  Since the TVs were locked down (commercial grade) I had to find out what the sequence was to get into the menus.  Luckily, LG has online documents for just about everything. I had to create an image that was 1366×768 pixels in JPG format and place it in a folder named LG_DTV on the root of the FAT formatted USB flash drive.  [MENU] [LOCKS] then press [7] seven times and you get into the USB LOADER menu.  Select TV FIRMWARE then UPLOAD LOGO.  Done and Done.  Only thing left was to power cycle the TV. BTW – don’t forget your flash drive in the TV… Thats a dead giveaway.

This blurry photo was the best I could do. Its hard to hit the power button on the remote AND hold the phone still enough to snap a picture WHILE not getting caught :-)

Just to show that there isn’t any funny business going on, here’s a short clip of the TV turning on and everyone greeted with the logo before switching to some guide.
