This is my entry for the HackaDay trinket contest. Basically, they’re giving away 20 trinkets randomly for plastering their logo on something – anything. I thought about it for a while but came up blank. Then, while traveling, I thought “why not plaster their HaD logo on every TV I could find at this hotel.” Now, Everyone turning on the TV will be greeted by this logo and who knows, it may become a legacy there. I did a little research and found it was fairly easy to change the splash screen on LG TVs. Since the TVs were locked down (commercial grade) I had to find out what the sequence was to get into the menus. Luckily, LG has online documents for just about everything. I had to create an image that was 1366×768 pixels in JPG format and place it in a folder named LG_DTV on the root of the FAT formatted USB flash drive. [MENU] [LOCKS] then press seven times and you get into the USB LOADER menu. Select TV FIRMWARE then UPLOAD LOGO. Done and Done. Only thing left was to power cycle the TV. BTW – don’t forget your flash drive in the TV… Thats a dead giveaway.
Just to show that there isn’t any funny business going on, here’s a short clip of the TV turning on and everyone greeted with the logo before switching to some guide.
